Mischievous, mysterious and never quite what he seems.
Puck is part of my A Midsummer Night’s Dream collection, hand-drawn in green and blue pencil crayon and inspired by Shakespeare’s mischievous fairy and agent of chaos.
My love for these characters began in childhood, watching the 1999 film adaptation set amongst the beautiful Italian countryside. I remember being completely captivated by its gardens, costumes and dreamlike atmosphere - it felt like stepping into another world.
Returning to the characters through drawing years later felt like rediscovering that same sense of wonder. There was something almost magical about sitting down with pencil crayons and becoming completely absorbed in the story once again.
For Puck, I wanted to capture something playful, elusive and slightly unpredictable. There is a sense of mystery surrounding him - a character who seems to exist somewhere between the human and fairy worlds, quietly watching, meddling and delighting in the chaos he creates.
His portrait draws on the tradition of classical portraiture while allowing the texture, colour and expressive quality of pencil crayon to bring a softer, more contemporary character to the piece. I wanted him to feel almost like a figure caught in a fleeting moment, with just enough mischief to suggest that he might disappear back into the forest at any moment.
Part of an ongoing collection exploring A Midsummer Night’s Dream, alongside Titania, Oberon and Hermia, with more characters to follow.
